Online Courses FAQ
How do I take online tests?
Online tests are taken at the student’s computer. Exams might be timed, or they may be in the form of an essay or project and due within a longer time period (such as several days to a week). Most exams are “open book” as the focus is on the application of concepts rather than the memorization of facts.
Are exams proctored?
Exams are not proctored. (Again, textbooks are allowed during exams as exams focus on applying knowledge learned.)
How do I contact my instructor?
You will be able to contact your instructor via email and phone. Each instructor has posted office hours, however students may email the instructor at any time. In addition, students may request an after-hours appointment with the instructor to discuss issues by phone or online chat.
How many students are in each class?
Classes are capped at 25 students, and the average class size is 18 students.
Is tutoring available?
Absolutely - Herzing's online class sizes are small, allowing the instructors to serve as the source of tutoring and extra assistance.
Do I have to log into class at a specific time?
No! You are never required to be online at a specific time, however you will need to make sure your homework is submitted by the due date.
How long do I need to work on each class?
You should plan on logging in online a minimum of 4 different days per week to stay current with course announcements and discussions. Students generally spend 8-10 hours per week for each online class (this includes reading the textbook, participating in course discussions, completing homework assignments, and taking tests).
What computer software do I need?
All students are required to have Windows XP (or higher) and the Microsoft Office Suite Professional 2007 which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. Students enrolled at the Online campus will be provided with the Microsoft Office Suite at no additional cost; students enrolled at a Herzing ground campus can purchase this software at a deep discount from their campus. Other software may be required depending on your program, i.e. any computer science or design-related programs.
How do I receive my books?
If you go to an on-ground Herzing campus, you will receive your books from that campus. If you are an Online campus student, your books will be shipped to you by UPS.
What happens if I have a technical problem?
Technical support is available 24/7 through the online platform provider, so you can call them anytime for real-person support for a variety of computer and technical issues. You should inform your instructor if a technical problem causes any delays in your classroom participation.
Do students have to work in groups?
Most courses do have one or two required group projects, however most homework assignments are completed individually.
How do students interact online?
Students usually interact using email or the discussion boards. Each discussion board is organized into “discussion threads” so you can see what the original question was, what the response to the question was, and any additional responses from other students. The instructor will post questions to be answered, monitor the discussion, and help to summarize and clarify as needed. The discussion board is the key element to the classroom participation grade in Herzing's online classes.
How do I use the library?
There is a library section in the online classroom which links you to the online library resources. Herzing subscribes to several online databases so students can search and access articles and reference books at no charge. If you are enrolled at the Herzing Online campus and wish to check out hard-copy books, you can search the online database of all the books in the Herzing College-US system and put in a request online. The book would then be shipped to you; once you are finished with it you would ship it back. Students are also provided the telephone and emails of librarians in the Herzing College system so they can ask for reference and research assistance.
