Herzing’s Native American outreach program participates in NIEA convention

National Indian Education Association LogoThe National Indian Education Association Convention (NIEA) was held on October 22-25 at the Midwest Airline Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This year the convention featured over 180 workshop presenters and co-presenters, 140 exhibitors and vendor businesses, 225 junior high/high school students, and 60 Tribal leaders and elders. Carla Culver from the Wyandotte Nation (Oklahoma) was the proud winner of a beautiful gift basket presented to her by Cheryl Evans-Smith, Director of Native American Education for Herzing University Online.

Carla Culver from the Wyandotte Nation (Oklahoma) was the proud winner of a beautiful gift basket presented to her by Cheryl Evans –SmithHerzing University is a member of the NIEA and will become more involved with Tribal Nations across the United States, with the goal of helping Tribal members acquire funding, scholarships, and an opportunity to receive a higher education to bring the knowledge and resources back to the reservations for their communities to flourish. Cheryl Evans-Smith, Director of Native American Education, has been a member of the NIEA since 2005. Since accepting her leadership role with Herzing, she has been building relationships and creating solid relationships for partnerships and the promotion of the University.

The Native American Education Department at Herzing University Online is a new department with the objective to support the Native American traditional cultures and values while helping to improve education opportunities for all Native American, Alaskan Natives, and Native Hawaiians throughout the United States. “Initially, we are working most closely with Tribes in Arizona and Wisconsin, and the Great Lakes Intertribal Counsel.” Evans-Smith stated. “We are also starting to work with many Tribal Higher Education Directors, Indian Health Services, Tribal Police, Casino Security and Technology Departments across the nation that employ Tribal members.”

Ms. Evans-Smith and her department have also been working closely with the Military, High School, and Corporate outreach initiatives to ensure all Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, and Native Hawaiians are able to attend Herzing University using available Tribal funding.
