Exploring the Fiscal Department

Tina Johann
Have you ever wondered what happens to your account after you begin classes at Herzing University? You’ve received and signed your award letter, but what happens after that?
These are questions that the Fiscal Department is here to answer. The Fiscal Department at Herzing University provides many services to our students. Once a student begins classes, the Fiscal Department is responsible for making sure that each student’s tuition is accurately billed for the semester.
The Fiscal Department is also responsible for applying all financial aid to students’ accounts. If there are excess loan funds on your account, the Fiscal Department is responsible for making sure those excess loan funds are sent to you in the form of a stipend check. If a bank or check cashing facility calls Herzing University to verify that an excess loan check is legitimate, the Fiscal Department is responsible for that verification process.
Some of our students use employer tuition assistance/tuition reimbursement in their studies at Herzing University. Some employers pay for tuition costs prior to classes being completed. When this is the case, the Fiscal Department is responsible for putting together tuition invoices for the employer so they know the cost of tuition and the classes they are paying for. When the employer makes the payment, the Fiscal Department is responsible for applying the payment to the student’s account. Employers can also reimburse students after the course is completed and a grade has been earned. The Fiscal Department provides official statements to these students verifying that classes have been completed and paid for.

Another aspect of the Fiscal Department is payment plans. Payment plans are set up for our students who either want to pay cash for the cost of their tuition or students whose financial aid does not cover the entire cost of tuition. This is a very unique service of Herzing University and the Fiscal Department is responsible for receiving the payments from students and posting the payments to their accounts. Payments can be made via the internet on our secure internet payment web-site, via mail through check or money order, or over the phone. Over the phone payments are typically credit card payments and all the information given to the Fiscal Department is kept confidential. Accuracy is key in this task and the Fiscal Department strives to provide the best possible customer service to our students in this arena. Herzing University is aware that issues do arise in life and the fiscal department is committed to working with students who experience unforeseen financial hardships. The Fiscal Department is always available to discuss missed payments and will work with you to find an alternative payment date. Our students are our top priority and the Fiscal Department is here to work with students so they can continue their education.
At Herzing University we also have United States Military students from all branches of the Military. The Fiscal Department works with the specific branches of the Military to make sure tuition payments are received and posted to the student’s account. Veterans of the United States Military along with their families and dependents are also students of Herzing University that the Fiscal Department works with diligently to make sure that they receive the Military Benefit they are due for their service.
If a student withdraws, whether during the middle of the term or the end of a term, the Fiscal Department is responsible for performing Return to Title IV calculations along with an institutional refund calculation. These calculations consist of determining how much financial aid a student earned for that semester and how much financial aid needs to be returned. The Return to Title IV calculations are determined by the Federal Government and the Fiscal Department is required to follow the guidelines provided.
After a student completes their time with Herzing University whether through graduation or withdrawing from the school, the Fiscal Department still has work to do. Graduated and withdrawn students who received financial aid are required to complete exit counseling. The exit counseling session is a tool used to provide students with information on the upcoming repayment phase of their student loans. The Fiscal Department is responsible for sending the exit counseling information to each graduated and withdrawn student and making sure that it is completed.
From acceptance to graduation and beyond, the Fiscal Department has a vital role in providing the best service possible to our students. If you have fiscal questions throughout your education at Herzing University, the Fiscal Department is available to take your phone call Sunday – Saturday.
