President’s Outlook

Todd Rickel
How uncertain are the times in which we live? How certain are you about your future?
I’d hazard a guess that you are as concerned as most Americans are these days. But you have an advantage over most. While most everyone is talking about their present conditions and talking about the future of the economy and their own lives, you are actively doing something about it. You enrolled in school.
Most everyone dreams about a better life. Fewer talk about what it might take to change their lives. Fewer still try to make a change. But to paraphrase a famous philosopher from the 20th century (Yoda), there is no “try” there is only “do” or “do not.”
By the mere fact that you have enrolled in school, you can classify yourself as a “doer.” Be proud of your decision. Stand by it. Stick with it. Encourage others to join you. Wrap yourself in the confidence you are making a change in your life, even if the exact nature of the change remains uncertain.
And make that change meaningful. Study. Open and read your books. Do your homework before it is due. Participate in classes. Challenge yourself. Remember how you promised yourself toward the end of the last term that you would work harder next term?
It’s next term.
Online is a blessing for many who cannot attend bricks and mortar campuses. It is convenient. It offers you ways to listen, read, and respond in a thoughtful manner. You do not need to answer a question with the first response that comes to your mind because the professor calls on you. You can ponder, research, and respond in a way that mirrors many workplace environments. “Get it right” is better than “get it fast.”
Make two promises. First, promise to make this term a good term for you. Don’t wait until next term. Do what you need to do now to be more successful.
Second. Promise to share your success with another. Share it with a co-worker, relative, friend, fellow student, or the person in line ahead of you at the grocery store. Share. Encourage. Show the path to another and you will never walk alone.
Make a difference in your life and in another’s. That’s a promise we make every day at Herzing. Join us.
And congratulations for doing. Keep it up. The world could use more like you.
