The First Step to Excellence is Attendance
The philosophy of Herzing University is that college is not only a place to learn technical and business skills and to develop academically, but also a place to develop important work habits. Important work habits include responsibility and reliability, and attendance is a major factor in both.
Missing a class affects more than the individual student. When one student does not participate in a discussion board, that student’s perspective and individual opinion is lost and can negatively impact the whole class. In addition, many instructors require not just original posts, but also replies, and a student cannot reply to a post that is not there. Finally, some courses require group work and other students may be depending on your input. For these reasons and others, and to avoid disruption to the educational process caused by erratic attendance, the University emphasizes attendance in all courses.
At Herzing University Online Campus, we are committed to helping you succeed and encourage you to actively participate in your classes to get the most from your educational experience and investment. Here are suggested student best practices for your online classroom participation and attendance:
- It is strongly recommended that you log in three to four times per week on different days to post to the discussion boards, check announcements, review the syllabus, and complete written assignments, quizzes, and exams. These recommendations are based on academic success rates at Herzing University and across other online schools.
- For most classes, 25% or more of your grade is based on your participation in online discussions. Many instructors evaluate your posts to the discussion board based on frequency, timeliness, and quality of content. While many of you have busy full-time work schedules, it is recommended that you log in both during the week and on the weekend to fulfill the requirements and deadlines for discussion posts. Some instructors may even require separate mid-week and weekend posts to receive full credit for discussion boards.
- Throughout the term, instructors will post class announcements about important deadlines, assignments, and other pertinent information for your class. It is highly recommended that you regularly check the internal messages section, announcements, and within the classroom for any updated information. If you have any doubts about due dates, email or call your instructor so you don’t miss deadlines.
- Attendance is tracked by the Campus and your student status can fall in jeopardy if you do not actively login to your classes. While uncommon, you will be automatically dropped from enrollment if you do not login for 14 consecutive days. In order to help avoid this serious consequence, Student Services reaches out to all students who are not actively logging into their courses. This is not meant as a reprimand and does not “count against” your academic record; it is simply a courtesy to ensure that no one is unknowingly withdrawn. Being dismissed from school for a lack of attendance can result in negative academic and financial consequences that will adversely affect your ability to re-enter Herzing University Online Campus.
If you have any issues or problems arise that will affect your class participation, please contact your instructor(s) by phone or email, and also contact Student Services. We are committed to your success, and want to make sure that we provide you with any information you may need to excel in your classes. Remember: the first step to excellence is attendance!
