Graphic Design Overview

Graphic Design - Overview

Graphic design is the art of visually communicating a message to an intended group of people by using type, images and layout. This message can appear on a magazine ad, box of corn flakes, CD cover, coupon flier, movie poster, textbook, gum wrapper, web site…anywhere and everywhere one party wishes to communicate with a target audience.

Graphic Design - Is it for you?

Graphic design blends communication, art, technology and problem solving. There are many different types of graphic design, there are many different types of graphic designers. However, they all share the same main characteristics: an interest in communication, appreciation of the arts and culture (performance, visual, literary, travel), and analytical thinking. While graphic designers do not need to posses strong drawing or illustration skills, those who do can use that skill in their designs.

As both creative and analytical thinkers, graphic designers are result- and goal-oriented, and generally do not like routine or repetitive tasks. Designers welcome challenges and enjoy new projects that allow them to exercise their unique ability for creative problem-solving.

Because graphic design work is completed on behalf of an organization or client, designers must be able to take criticism about their work. If the client is not happy with the final design they are paying for, the designer (as the communication expert) must be able to explain why they chose the design and how it will best convey the client’s message, but ultimately must work with the client to make sure they are happy with the end result.
