Health Information Management (HIM) professionals are experts in analyzing, managing, and protecting health information. As the health care industry continues its transition to electronic management of patient information, HIM professionals must also have an aptitude for technology and understanding of computer systems and electronic security measures. It is important for Health Information Managers to possess strong leadership, communication and decision-making skills.
What is Health Information Management?
Health Information Management is the study of the principles and practices of acquiring, analyzing and protecting electronic and traditional health information. This includes the responsibility of implementing and maintaining all federal, state, and institutional laws and guidelines. HIM professionals work in a variety of settings including:
