What is a scholarship?
A scholarship is a monetary award for a student to further his/her education while attending a college or university. Scholarships are awarded on a number of different criteria usually reflecting the values and specific purposes of the donor or founder of the award.
-
Why should I apply for a scholarship?
Scholarships provide funding for students to cover their cost of tuition. This funding does not need to be repaid and will decrease the overall debt that student incur during their time in school.
Scholarships are a form of recognition. When a company or foundation recognizes a student by awarding a scholarship, they are selecting that student as someone displaying unique and admirable characteristics. This recognition can be used on a resume, job application, or college entrance application.

How do I obtain a scholarship?
- Start your scholarship search as soon as possible. Keep in mind that some of the scholarships which you will be applying for will not be available immediately; make a note of the scholarships for which you are eligible and mark them in a calendar.
- Prepare yourself for the entire process. Scholarships are awarded to students who are involved in both academics and extra-curricular activities (professional clubs and organizations, community groups, volunteer events).
- Create a tracking sheet of scholarships that would be applicable to you (ethnicity, gender, location).
- Scholarship opportunities can be discovered in a variety of places. Some locations include libraries, local businesses or civic organizations, work force development, and the internet.
- Use your personal network. Check at your job and your spouse’s or parent's job for scholarships, tuition assistance or reimbursement.
- Most organizations and foundations will have online scholarship applications. Some may ask for you to mail in a hard copy of your application while others will provide an email address for submitting the application electronically.
- Apply! Put your best effort into every scholarship application you complete. ALWAYS provide honest, updated information about yourself. Pay close attention to deadlines connected to each scholarship. Most scholarship applications take time; a friendly follow-up at least two weeks after submission of an application is encouraged.
