Scholarship FAQs

I am entering school as an adult rather than directly out of high school, can I still apply for scholarships?

Yes! Scholarships are available and awarded to all types of students. By being an “adult learner” and “non-traditional” student you have an advantage because you are unique. Use your unique characteristics in your scholarship search in order to locate scholarships specific to your experience.

I have never written an essay. Why must I submit an essay and how do I get started?

Essays are common in scholarship applications; scholarship providers want to be sure that applicants are worthy of investing money in. Essays allow providers to see the writing style and effectiveness of an applicant. Many essays allow applicants to talk about themselves and to describe their unique situation. Get started by visiting the “Writing an Essay” section of the Scholarship Resources page.

Do I have to give out personal information when applying for scholarships?

Some scholarships do require applicants to provide information such as date of birth, address, and email address. While this information is personal, it is being requested to make sure that an applicant is legitimate. If you are concerned about information being requested you can always check the privacy section of the scholarship website or contact the foundation directly to ask about the safety of your information.

Can I use an essay that I have written more than once?

It is not advisable to use the exact same essay for more than one scholarship. You should however keep your essays as living documents that can be changed and adjusted based on the questions in an application. If there is a portion of an essay that you find applicable to more than one application, then it is fine to use it -- just be sure that you are adjusting your essays to meet the specific criteria of each application.

Do scholarships applications take a lot of time?

An application can take less than 5 minutes to complete or they may take a few days to gather all necessary information. Think about the time that you are spending as creating progress for your academic and professional career. If you have to spend several days for the chance of receiving a $1000 scholarship, then it will be time well spent if you are awarded it. If you have trouble with any portion of the application Herzing, can help. Contact the Scholarship Specialist at scholarships@onl.herzing.edu.

Can scholarships cover my entire tuition cost?

Scholarships can cover your entire cost of tuition, but more than likely a scholarship will be a supplement to other funding being used to cover your cost of tuition. Keep in mind that scholarships have more than just a monetary value. Being awarded a scholarship means that you can update your resume to reflect your award. This career development can help you to get noticed when applying for a job.
