Writing an Essay
Many scholarships require an essay to go along with the other application materials. Writing an essay requires time, thought, and sincerity. Take your time to read the question carefully and think about how you will be answering. Herzing has many avenues of support for writing essays including the Tutoring and Writing Center. Use as many of your resources as possible.
-
Essay Tips
- Read the essay question several times and think about your response.
- Create an outline.
- Write your essay response, being sure to exceed the minimum word count requirements (do not just meet the minimum requirements).
- Have your essay reviewed. You can utilize the Tutoring and Writing Center in Blackboard.
- Re-write using the input from your reviewer.
- Absolutely do NOT plagiarize in any way. Scholarship-awarding is based on you and your abilities. It can be considered fraud to be awarded a scholarship under false pretenses.
-
Where to Look for Scholarships?
Search locally for scholarship opportunities in your area.- Go to your local library and check the reference desk for a list of local scholarship opportunities.
- Check the website for the high school that you graduated from to see if they offer a scholarship for alumni.
- Inquire at local organizations or religious institutions. Check your local church or religious center for scholarships. Search local organizations like the Elks, Shriners, or other community foundations (search using this exact phrase “community foundation”).
-
Employer Reimbursement
One of the best ways to have your tuition covered is through employer reimbursement. If you are currently working, ask your Human Resource representative about tuition assistance or employer reimbursement options. You can also check your company website for tuition assistance options.
If you are not currently working, have your parents or spouse use the same steps to find out about spouse or dependent tuition assistance options at their work.
